Sánchez/Ustero beat world No.1s in Valladolid P2

Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero delivered another strong statement at the Valladolid Premier Padel P2. In the women's semi-finals, the Spaniards defeated world number ones Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6. After 1 hour and 48 minutes, Sánchez and Ustero are through to the final and confirm their current top form on the World Padel Tour.

Against the world's top-ranked pairing, Sánchez and Ustero prevailed in straight sets for the first time. In fast conditions that particularly suited Andrea Ustero's playing style, the duo looked more focused and determined than the favourites from the top of the draw from the outset.

First set under clear control

From the opening phase, Sánchez and Ustero took the initiative. Disciplined in rallies and aggressive at the key moments, they kept Triay and Brea under constant pressure. While the world number ones struggled to find their rhythm, the Spanish pairing looked more structured and more present at the net.

Andrea Ustero shaped the early stages of the match in particular. Even with the early morning start in Valladolid, which often creates unusual playing conditions, she remained dominant. Her shots were powerful and direct, she converted advantages in long rallies quickly and steadily pulled the contest in their direction.

Ustero exploits fast court conditions

The very fast conditions on the court in Valladolid played into the hands of Sánchez and Ustero. Ustero created pressure early and gave her opponents little time to adjust. Her attacks from the diagonal and at the net forced Triay and Brea into more errors and shorter rallies.

Brea struggles in the diagonal

Gemma Triay tried to restore balance through tactical variation, but the Spaniards remained more focused in the key moments. The first set went to Sánchez and Ustero 6-3, underlining their tactical clarity in this tournament phase.

Second set becomes a test of nerves

In the second set, Sánchez and Ustero started strongly again, took an early break and seemed to be marching directly towards victory. Yet precisely when they could have extended their lead, they let it slip from their grasp.

Triay and Brea seized the opportunity and briefly shifted the momentum. Sánchez and Ustero lost serve, had to fight again and later stood once more with a chance to close out the match. Once again they faltered when serving for victory.

Tie-break won 7-2

Despite the missed chances, Sánchez and Ustero remained mentally stable. In the decisive tie-break they found their best version again and won 7-2 to take the second set. The finish looked particularly authoritative after the earlier swings and showed that the duo can hold firm under pressure.

The 7-6 second set reflects a contest that was significantly tighter than the first set had suggested. At a moment when many teams lose their way, Sánchez and Ustero stayed clear and efficient.

Second semi-final win against the world number ones

The significance of this victory extends beyond a single match. Sánchez and Ustero defeated the world number ones in the semi-finals for the second week in a row. A week earlier they had eliminated Triay and Brea at the Valencia P1 before going on to win the title. In Valladolid they now repeat that semi-final triumph in straight sets.

Sánchez and Ustero therefore currently present themselves as the pairing in top form on the women's circuit. Their game looks more coordinated, their confidence greater and their chances of a second consecutive title look strong. In the final they await either Nuria Rodríguez and Giulia Dal Pozzo or Paula Josemaría and Bea González.

For Josemaría and González, a final against Sánchez and Ustero would be particularly charged. Josemaría and Sánchez won the title together in Valladolid last year. Now the former partners could meet on opposite sides of the net.

Difficult phase for Triay and Brea

For Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea, the defeat confirms a somewhat less settled phase. At the start of the season the world number ones looked exceptionally consistent and reached almost every final. Yet they also suffered five consecutive final defeats against Josemaría and González before celebrating victory again at the Italy Major.

Since then the momentum has been less clear. After their semi-final exit in Valencia against Sánchez and Ustero, Triay and Brea fell at the same stage again in Valladolid against the same opponents. For the world number ones this is no cause for alarm, but a sign that competition has tightened.

Right now it is Sánchez and Ustero who are making the biggest step forward. With two semi-final wins over the world number ones in two weeks and a possible second consecutive title in Valladolid, they are setting new standards on the Premier Padel calendar.
