Málaga P1: favorites advance, Salazar/Osoro out

At the Premier Padel Málaga P1, the second day of the round of 16 brought no major upset in the men's draw. The leading pairs mostly prevailed with authority and created clarity for the round of eight. The women's side was noticeably more turbulent: the early exit of the newly formed partnership Alejandra Salazar and Aranza Osoro provided the only real surprise of the day.

Men: top pairs set a clear tone

Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas opened their tournament plan with a convincing performance. Against qualifiers José Solano and Ramiro Pereyra, a structured match with solid serving and assertive net play was enough. They advanced safely with a 6-2, 6-4 win and avoided unnecessary extensions.

Even more impressive was the display by world No. 1s Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia. Against David Gala and Enzo Jensen they steered the contest from the start and left little room for resistance. The 6-3, 6-2 victory reflected clear dominance in the decisive rallies. Tempo, placement and communication looked well synchronized, an important signal for the rounds ahead.

Ale Galán and Fede Chingotto were even more ruthless. Denis Perino and Facundo Domínguez found few answers to the early pressure and fell 0-6, 3-6. Especially in the first set the favored duo looked nearly flawless and underlined that their form curve is on track.

Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno also halted the surprise run of Coquito Zamora and Pablo Sánchez. With a 6-2, 6-2 scoreline they ended the young pair's path and underlined their routines in key sequences.

More men's pairs book a last-eight ticket

Edu Alonso and Aimar Goñi competed with focus against Lucho Capra and Luis Hernández and without major lapses. Their 6-4, 6-3 win felt earned, but never out of control. Tolito Aguirre and Álex Arroyo were similarly composed: against Pablo García and Pablo Lijó they prevailed 6-3, 6-3 and likewise secured their place among the last eight.

Women: Salazar and Osoro fall at the first hurdle

The major outlier came in the women's draw. Alejandra Salazar and Aranza Osoro played their first tournament together in Málaga and entered as the No. 8 seeds. But Bea Caldera and Carmen Goenaga took the chance clinically and won 6-4, 6-3.

The draw was never a gift for the newly assembled partnership. Caldera and Goenaga are regarded as a dangerous duo capable of creating pressure early. That is exactly what happened again: they dictated the rhythm, led the exchanges in critical moments and gave Salazar and Osoro no time to settle as a unit.

While Salazar and Osoro exited, other seeded and in-form pairs fulfilled their role. Marta Ortega and Martina Calvo mastered their joint debut with a clear 6-2, 6-3 win over Jana Montes and Marta Barrera. The match flow pointed to early security and good coordination in basic actions.

Tamara Icardo and Claudia Jensen also started with confidence. As recent Bordeaux P2 champions they beat Lucía Sainz and Sofía Saiz 6-2, 6-3. The success confirms their current form and keeps them in the race for a long tournament week.

Lorena Rufo and Victoria Iglesias defeated Lucía Martínez and Águeda Pérez 6-3, 6-3. More drama was needed by Nuria Rodríguez and Giulia Dal Pozzo: against Ara Martínez and Laura Luján they went to three sets and finally won 6-3, 4-6, 6-0. The third set then showed a clear response and underlined the favorites' mentality.

Taken together, the hierarchy was largely respected. On the men's side, leading teams closed out clear results and avoided major turbulence. In the women's field the picture remained more mixed: many favorites advanced, yet the early departure of Salazar and Osoro keeps tension high.

For the upcoming rounds in Málaga, an intriguing mix has therefore emerged. On one side stand well-established top pairs with controlled displays; on the other sits a women's draw that still signals openness after the first upset.
